Governments can be masters of war, but artists can use their gift to create unique environments expressing peace. Join us as the best and the brightest, including Grammy, Emmy, Oscar, Pulitzer, and Golden Globe nominees and winners, combine talents in a live once-in-a-lifetime event.

Yoko Ono once declared WAR IS OVER and many years later it still rings fresh. Impressario Marc Huestis has taken that theme, and in conjunction with Mike Farrell and Robert Greenwald's group Artists United has assembled an incredible roster of Hollywood stars and local legends alike, all with the missive to create peace and benefit the group.

The centerpiece of the event , at the Castro, July 18, will be a live reading of the first scene from Tony Kushner's new play ONLY WE WHO GUARD THE MYSTERY SHALL BE UNHAPPY with none other than Karen Black playing the role of Laura Bush. This piece, which was recently on the cover of the Nation, features the enigmatic First Lady reading to the dead children of Iraq.

Kushner gave his blessing to this performance, and Huestis is excited about shopping for a Laura-esque wig for Black.

Also scheduled to appear- Janeane Garofalo, Hector Elizondo and Farrell himself, and a rare collaboration by Debora Iyall, former lead singer of ROMEO VOID, with acclaimed cellist Joan Jeanrenaud formerly of Kronos Quartet. Never say never! Rounding out the stellar line-up stellar are Imam Morteza Bakkur, Jay Rosenblatt, Jewelle Gomez, Jumping Buddha Ensemble, Maria Muldaur, Mark Eitzel, Will Durst, & Youth Speaks Slam Poets

7:30 pm gala show tickets are $27.50. Combined 7:30 pm gala and 10 pm celebrity reception tickets (including preferred seating) $60. For tickets, please call (415) 863-0611 or e-mail hostess2@earthlink.net. Tickets are also be available at A DIFFERENT LIGHT BOOKS, 489 Castro St.

Artists United, the evenings beneficiary, was born as a committee of artists opposed to the invasion of Iraq. Through celebrity appearances on television, radio and in print, the organization now encourages public debate, engages opinion makers and concerned citizens to raise the profile of progressive issues pertinent to the well being of people here and abroad in order to preserve the values that once made America the hope of the world.
