Drobny: Liberal net will launch, and big, in January
Posted Tuesday, November 4, 2003 by stranger

Chicago millionaire Sheldon Drobny has maintained a low media profile as he prepares to launch a liberal talk network, so we were surprised to hear him pop up on the air yesterday as a guest on a local talk show in Florida.

Although most of the conversation with host Bud Beck on WWPR-AM Bradenton, FL focused on politics, where the two liberals agreed on just about everything, Drobny spoke a bit about the new network that AnShell Media, the company that he and his wife Anita own, is preparing to debut next year.

"It'll be more clarified when I'm able to talk more, but this thing is going to be a major launch after the first of the year. It's not a question of if, it's now a question of when - - and the when is early January. It's going to be a lot bigger than we all thought. It's been a lot of heavy lifting for a year, Bud, and I think we've put together a short-term solution to the problem, which is the right-wing radio networks, which I think we'll be able to make a major impact upon with the network we have, the number of cities we'll be in and the message we'll have to an immediate radio audience that's just starving for that kind of dialogue. It will be a very good short-term approach to getting the message out and getting rid of the people who are in office who are just causing us so many problems," Drobny said of the new liberal radio network.

Drobny said his new network will attempt to counter what he claims are two types of media bias. First, he said, are the obvious right-wing media, naming Fox News Channel and Rush Limbaugh as examples. "Those are so obviously in violation of fair and balanced, and are just appealing to an audience of haters, but they get onto the agenda of the mainstream media. The mainstream media is a different problem altogether. I'm not accusing the mainstream media of aiding and abetting the Bush administration. ["I do," Beck chimed in.] Well, they are, but they're not doing it necessarily by design," Drobny said. "The media themselves are not independent enough because they represent very large corporations, which are getting much larger, and they appeal to corporate America, with the power, the resources and the status quo. Their sole interest, primarily, is to cozy up with the powerful so that they continue making money." >> More

The Propagandists Win Again
Posted Tuesday, November 4, 2003 by stranger

Yesterday, CBS bowed to political pressure from a zealous band of conservative enforcers, deep-sixing a four-hour miniseries about the former First Family.

The critics had claimed that "The Reagans" was inadequately flattering to the 40th president. Nowhere in the miniseries, it seems, was Reagan shown walking on water. The dialogue apparently included a curse word or two and a passage where Reagan seemed to lack sympathy for the victims of AIDS. So now the whole two-night program is being shunted off to a small pay-cable service owned by the network's parent, Viacom. CBS won't air a single word.

Too bad old man Paley isn't still around to witness this. He knew from hard experience how a television network must protect its independence and integrity. Rule No. 1: Don't let the partisan interest groups control what you air.

Oh, president Les Moonves and the current crew at CBS denied yesterday that they were crumbling to outside pressure. "This decision is based solely on our reaction to seeing the final film, not the controversy that erupted around a draft of the script," the network bosses harrumphed.

If so, what an amazing coincidence it was! >> More>

Miles from 'fair and balanced'
Posted Monday, November 3, 2003 by stranger

A veteran producer this week alleged that Fox News executives issue a daily memorandum to staff on news coverage to bend the network's reporting into conformity with management's political views, refocusing attention on the partisan bias of America's most watched cable news operation.

The charges by Charlie Reina, 55, whose six-year tenure at Fox ended April 9, first surfaced Wednesday in a letter he posted on an influential Web site maintained by Jim Romenesko for the Poynter Institute, an organization that promotes journalistic education and ethics.

Concerns about Fox, which styles its news coverage as "fair and balanced," begin with its owner, Australian-born Rupert Murdoch. The corporate boards and family investors who control most of the American news media generally feel obliged to maintain a wall of separation between news and editorial opinion. Murdoch, by contrast, operates in the style of the traditional Fleet Street proprietors, who dismiss such distinctions as inconvenient fictions. >> More

Robert Greenwald, Producer/Director of "Uncovered: The Whole Truth About the Iraq War" - A BUZZFLASH INTERVIEW
Posted Sunday, November 2, 2003 by symbolman

Robert Greenwald, Producer/Director of "Uncovered: The Whole Truth About the Iraq War," A New Documentary That Reveals How the Bush Administration Lied the Nation Into War

"Uncovered: The Whole Truth About the Iraq War," premiering on November 3rd, includes an A-team of experts who have exposed the Bush administration lies that deceived the nation.

The Executive Producer is Robert Greenwald, who also served in the same role for "Unprecedented," which documented the theft of the presidency in 2000.

This is the description of the "Uncovered" from the TruthUncovered.com website: "This controversial and arresting film takes you behind the walls of government, as CIA, Pentagon and foreign service experts speak out, many for the first time, detailing the lies, misstatements and exaggerations that served as the reasons to fight a 'preemptive' war that wasn't necessary.

The war with Iraq brought about unparalleled resistance, both in the streets and in the chambers of government. This documentary offers an in-depth look at the unsettling distortion of intelligence and the 'spin and hype' presented to the American people, the Congress and the press. Fighting wars to bring about regime change is in breach of international law. Yet, throughout the fall of 2002, and into the weeks preceding the war in Iraq, the Bush administration systematically distorted intelligence evidence and misled the public in order to turn opinion favor of 'regime change' in Iraq."

A noted television and film producer, Greenwald is a committed activist for democracy.>> More

CNN FILM BEING CONFISCATED IN IRAQ
Posted Sunday, November 2, 2003 by symbolman

Read the Transcript from CNN where reporters admit that the military are CONFISCATING FILM.

SAN MIGUEL: Well, Jane, I'm sure that the folks that are upset there are the U.S. military, officials who are investigating this attack. Have you had a chance to talk to any of them? I know that they're keeping you far away from the crash site and may not have had a lot of time to give you any kind of official statements or anything like that. But have you been able to gauge anything about heir demeanor or whatever?

ARRAF: Well, they're reluctant to talk here, Renay. In fact, they've been confiscating film. They've threatened to confiscate ours and everyone else's, which is why we're on this rooftop of a private home.

Officials here are understandably nervous. There aren't any senior people on the ground. When these things happen, they generally do not make statements. And, in fact, they're forbidden to talk.

This has become a climate over the last few months where it's very difficult to get information from the military on the ground either because they've been forbidden to talk or they have been ordered that no one is allowed to take pictures. And increasingly, what we're seeing in sites like this, and even in Baghdad, is that it has become the kind of place where you cannot -- you are not free to take pictures, you're not free to talk to soldiers.

They are extremely nervous given these continuing attacks. And it's reflected here -- Renay.>> More

Bush's U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln "Blame the Troops" lie
Posted Wednesday, October 29, 2003 by symbolman

BUZZFLASH NEWS ANALYSIS

Media strategists noted afterward that Mr. Sforza and his aides had choreographed every aspect of the event, even down to the members of the Lincoln crew arrayed in coordinated shirt colors over Mr. Bush's right shoulder and the "Mission Accomplished" banner placed to perfectly capture the president and the celebratory two words in a single shot. The speech was specifically timed for what image makers call "magic hour light," which cast a golden glow on Mr. Bush.

Recent books by Joe Conason, Al Franken and David Corn have documented how Bush is a serial liar. When BuzzFlash interviewed Molly Ivins awhile back, we thought that she was quite fair to Bush. She didn't jump on the bandwagon of people who claim he is dumb. But she did, almost casually, state: "What we did was just look at Bush's record in "Shrub." And consequently, I think we were less surprised than anybody in America when Bush started governing from lies."

The right wing extremists and "good Christians" tolerate Bush's lies for different reasons, which we won't get into at this time. And no doubt, there are some naive Americans who believe that "God's chosen President" couldn't lie because he was anointed, as Bush claims, by the Lord Almighty. Much More on Bush's U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln "Blame the Troops" lie.

The Push For Liberal Radio - Wednesday, October 22, 2003

This is a partial transcript of Special Report with Brit Hume, October 21, that has been edited for clarity.

BRIT HUME, HOST: For years, American liberals have dreamed of having their own talk radio network with wall-to-wall shows hosted by liberals. The idea is to break what they consider the monopoly of conservative voices on talk radio. One man more than any other is doing something to make this dream come true. His name is Sheldon Drobny (search), there he is.

And Byron York, White House correspondent of National Review has been doing some reporting on who he is.

Byron, welcome back.

BYRON YORK, NATIONAL REVIEW CORRESPONDENT: Good to be here.

HUME: So, who is Sheldon Drobny?

YORK: He is a Chicago businessman, a millionaire, a venture capitalist, a philanthropist.

HUME: I assume from the investment he has made, some $10 million, he is a multimillionaire.

YORK: He is indeed. And he has put up $10 million, formed company called AnShell Media. And its goal is to start a liberal talk show radio network with 14 to 16 hours of programming a day. He says it will be in business by January.

HUME: Now, will this be a network that is itself on the air with its own programming, or will this be network that simply feeds product to radio stations around the country for their selected use?

YORK: I believe it will be on the air as a whole, because the whole idea is they believe that past efforts at liberal talk radio have failed because they were sandwiched in between conservative programs. So they want a whole liberal network to give -- you know, to get their message across.

HUME: Now, what sort of fellow is Sheldon Drobny?

YORK: The interesting thing about him is he likes to write on the side. And just doing a little...

HUME: For whom does he write?

YORK: Well, he writes for a small Website called makethemaccountable.com. And looking into what he was doing...

HUME: What is makethemaccountable.com?

YORK: It's a small liberal Website that you can read various criticisms of the Bush administration.

And looking into what he said, what he's written, I found that he had written a number of things that were basically comparing President Bush to a Nazi, which is one of the standard things you see really on the far edges of criticism of President Bush.>> More

Byron York - a pathetic hack - has once again made no real point other than to make obvious that he's both completely ignorant, living in rampant denial as well as being the point man for the White House when it comes to the Bush/Nazi connection - and that connection IS VERY REAL AND FACTUAL. WE have access to the papers that prove it and they come direct from the National Archives, hundreds of them.

Sheldon Drobney is a REAL MAN, one who DOES something about EVIL instead of lying on his back like a MEDIA LAPDOG like Byron York. Byron, do the world a favor - walk west until your hat floats, and take Brit Hume with you.

Meanwhile, have a look at my work, partly inspired long ago by Sheldon Drobny's writing. It's a flash movie called "Bush is Not a Nazi, so stop saying that..">> Click HERE

Bush Says Attacks Are a Sign of U.S. Progress
Posted Tuesday, October 28, 2003 by symbolman

President Bush yesterday put the best face on a new surge of violence in Iraq as his top defense aides huddled to discuss additional ways of thwarting the anti-American rebellion there before it becomes more widespread.

The president, speaking after attacks on police stations and a Red Cross facility in Iraq killed at least 35 people, said such attacks should be seen as a sign of progress because they show the desperation of those who oppose the U.S.-led occupation.

U.S. intelligence and military officials are saying U.S. forces in Iraq have a limited time to break the resistance before the general population joins it.

Another senior intelligence official said the United States has not devoted enough attention to understanding the anti-American groups in Iraq because intelligence resources have been devoted to locating weapons of mass destruction.

Democrats reacted with ridicule.

"Does the president really believe that suicide bombers are willing to strap explosives to their bodies because we're restoring electricity and creating jobs for Iraqis?" Kerry asked in a statement.>> More

In the words of the Illustrious Jon Stewart on the Daily Show - "DO THEY THINK WE'RE ALL RETARDED?!" Seriously, are they DEMENTED? This is Catch 22 and 1984 all rolled into one ridiculous statement. GET THESE PEOPLE OUT OF THAT WHITE HOUSE - Arrest them, Impeach them, whatever it takes before they destroy everything the US holds dear with their naked GREED and SHEER LIES. These are the stupidest statements yet from the squatter in the White House and his band of IDIOTS and THIEVES. These people should all be on a suicide watch in the HAGUE for WAR CRIMES, brought there by our own troops. This is beyond the pale. HOW DARE THEY INSULT OUR PEOPLE and our COUNTRY with this DRIVEL!

Iraq: Now More WMD-Free Than Ever!!
Posted Saturday, October 25, 2003 by stranger

By Barton Gellman, Washington Post

In their march to Baghdad on April 8, U.S. Marines charged past a row of eucalyptus trees that lined the boneyard of Iraq's thwarted nuclear dream. Sixty acres of warehouses behind the tree line, held under United Nations seal at Ash Shaykhili, stored machine tools, consoles and instruments from the nuclear weapons program cut short by the 1991 Persian Gulf War.

Thirty miles to the north and west, Army troops were rolling through the precincts of the Nasr munitions plant. Inside, stacked in oblong wooden crates, were thousands of high-strength aluminum tubes.

That equipment, and Iraq's effort to buy more of it overseas, were central to the Bush administration's charge that President Saddam Hussein had resumed long-dormant efforts to build a nuclear weapon. The lead combat units had more urgent priorities that day, but they were not alone in passing the stockpiles by. Participants in the subsequent hunt for illegal arms said months elapsed without a visit to Nasr and many other sites of activity that President Bush had called "a grave and gathering danger."

According to records made available to The Washington Post and interviews with arms investigators from the United States, Britain and Australia, it did not require a comprehensive survey to find the central assertions of the Bush administration's prewar nuclear case to be insubstantial or untrue. Although Hussein did not relinquish his nuclear ambitions or technical records, investigators said, it is now clear he had no active program to build a weapon, produce its key materials or obtain the technology he needed for either.

Among the closely held internal judgments of the Iraq Survey Group, overseen by David Kay as special representative of CIA Director George J. Tenet, are that Iraq's nuclear weapons scientists did no significant arms-related work after 1991, that facilities with suspicious new construction proved benign, and that equipment of potential use to a nuclear program remained under seal or in civilian industrial use.

Most notably, investigators have judged the aluminum tubes to be "innocuous," according to Australian Brig. Gen. Stephen D. Meekin, who commands the Joint Captured Enemy Materiel Exploitation Center, the largest of a half-dozen units that report to Kay. That finding is pivotal, because the Bush administration built its case on the proposition that Iraq aimed to use those tubes as centrifuge rotors to enrich uranium for the core of a nuclear warhead.

Administration officials interviewed for this story defended the integrity of the government's prewar intelligence and public statements. None agreed to be interviewed on the record. Vice President Cheney, in a televised interview last month, referred to a National Intelligence Estimate of October 2002, which said among other things that there was "compelling evidence that Saddam is reconstituting a uranium enrichment effort." Cheney said investigators searching for confirmation of those judgments "will find in fact that they are valid." His office did not respond to questions on Friday. >> Much More

This report is devastating. One has to wonder how the White House will attempt to spin this back.

Report to blame CIA for prewar intelligence
Posted Saturday, October 25, 2003 by stranger

By WILLIAM DOUGLAS, Knight Ridder Newspapers

A new round of partisan finger-pointing over who's to blame for misjudging prewar Iraq erupted Friday, as the top Democrat on the Senate Select Intelligence Committee said the panel's Republican chairman was trying to make the CIA the fall guy to deflect criticism from the White House.

The Senate Intelligence Committee is preparing a report evaluating why U.S. intelligence about the threat that Saddam Hussein's Iraq posed to U.S. interests exaggerated the severity of the threat. Sen. Pat Roberts, R-Kan., the panel's chairman, was quoted Friday as saying the White House was served badly by the CIA, which provided "sloppy" prewar intelligence.

Sen. John "Jay" Rockefeller, D-W.Va., responded Friday by saying that Roberts was trying to "lay all of this out on the intelligence community and never get to any other branches of government; in particular the White House and associated high and visible government agencies."

For months, Washington has been consumed by an extraordinarily vicious, even by Washington standards, series of efforts by various agencies - including the State and Defense departments, the CIA, the White House and the office of Vice President Cheney - to blame one another for misreading Iraq's prewar capacity to deliver weapons of mass destruction and its ties to the al-Qaida terrorist organization. >> More

Now, who out there thinks the CIA will lay down for these clowns and take the blame yet again? Expect more damaging news about the Bush administration between now and Election Day.

'Rock Against Bush:' Who Says Punks Don't Care?

Good Charlotte, Pennywise and Sum 41 have always been known more for their practical jokes than their practical advice. That may soon change.

Next year these bands, Green Day, NOFX, Alkaline Trio and others will unite to raise political awareness and encourage pop-punk fans to vote in the next presidential election — against George Bush. The groups will each contribute a track to the compilation Rock Against Bush and take part in at least one show on a tour organized and funded by NOFX singer/bassist Fat Mike, who also owns the label Fat Wreck Chords.

"About a year ago I decided to use my influence to get bands together to speak out about the president," Fat Mike said. "I think it's our responsibility as citizens and musicians to do so. He's wrecking the country and the world. He's starting wars for no reason, our economy is in the toilet, he's ruining the environment, and he does things like cut taxes when we need money." >> More

Limbaugh Treated by New-Age Hippies

"Sierra Tucson utilizes many different types of therapeutic modalities to access underlying issues," the website of the roughly $1000-a-day treatment center explains.

"Each modality is designed to unearth vital information from different angles and pathways into one’s self." (That is all supposed to happen before you head on to the adjoining Miraval Spa, a posh resort and sister company to Sierra Tucson, where you rest up at after you’ve done your 30 days in the treatment center.)

From "psychodynamic role-playing and yoga" to "adventure therapy," "Climbing Wall," "the desert experience" and "equine-assisted therapy" (yes, bonding with horses), Limbaugh may just think he died and went to "feminazi" hell. The website depicts photos of people with a decidedly Berkeley look sitting around on the floor in what seem like consciousness-raising sessions. Picture Rush holding his fellow travelers’ hands and singing Kumbayah.

Surely he’ll be reciting a line from the very president he lambasted for years: "I feel your pain." How many on the right would have thought that Bill Clinton would be getting the last chuckle, out there aiding his feminazi wife’s successful political career while their man Rush is wandering the desert reciting New Age mantras?>> More

Advance Preview of Interview with Gene Lyons on General Wesley Clark
Posted Tuesday, October 21, 2003 by symbolman

A BUZZFLASH INTERVIEW WITH GENE LYONS:

BUZZFLASH: You're probably one of the most well-informed journalists on how attack politics play themselves out with a culpable media, based on your extensive research and writing on the Clintons. How do you think the right wing is going to go after Clark? What can he expect? What advice would you give Clark and the people who are working for him?

LYONS: Well, the outlines of it are already evident. They're saying he's too tightly wrapped, which is kind of akin to what they tried to do with John McCain. They're saying he's a zealot and tends to become unhinged. They're suggesting he's crazed with ambition. I wrote in a column a couple of weeks ago that one of their lines of attack would be to portray him as sort of General Jack D. Ripper, who was the megalomaniacal general in Dr. Strangelove who was so concerned with his precious bodily fluids. And that's what I think they will try to do.

They might go all the way to the edge of suggesting some kind of mental illness. I don't think he's very vulnerable to that sort of smear. Clark gave a very interesting quote that I used in a column in a profile in Esquire. He said the whole question about running against George W. Bush boils down to how much pain can you take. So I think he has some idea of what's coming. I think he has some idea that it will be shrill, it will come from that side of the spectrum, and it will be harsh.

I think they're going to try to portray him as a crackpot and as wildly ambitious, and therefore dangerous. The right-wing will definitely label him an opportunist and say he's switching parties simply to become President and he's power-mad.>> More

Curtains Ordered for Media Coverage of Returning Coffins
Posted Tuesday, October 21, 2003 by symbolman

Since the end of the Vietnam War, presidents have worried that their military actions would lose support once the public glimpsed the remains of U.S. soldiers arriving at air bases in flag-draped caskets.

To this problem, the Bush administration has found a simple solution: It has ended the public dissemination of such images by banning news coverage and photography of dead soldiers' homecomings on all military bases.

In March, on the eve of the Iraq war, a directive arrived from the Pentagon at U.S. military bases. "There will be no arrival ceremonies for, or media coverage of, deceased military personnel returning to or departing from Ramstein airbase or Dover, Del., base, to include interim stops," the Defense Department said, referring to the major ports for the returning remains.

President Bush's opponents say he is trying to keep the spotlight off the fatalities in Iraq. "This administration manipulates information and takes great care to manage events, and sometimes that goes too far," said Joe Lockhart, who as White House press secretary joined President Bill Clinton at several ceremonies for returning remains. "For them to sit there and make a political decision because this hurts them politically -- I'm outraged.">> More

NBC and NYC Police rob man of First Amendment Rights on Saturday

"10 cops were called to intimidate me in front of the Saturday Night Live line last night.

I was wearing a flight suit with Bush name tag, AWOL written on the back - 'Chicken-Hawk' Badges (patches) and a helmet with 'George Chicken-Hawk Bush' written on it.

I was marching up and down the street not obstructing anyone. They asked me what I was doing. I said I was exercising my right of freedom of speech.

They said I could not do it there. I asked why. They said I was bothering people. I said that was the whole point of protest. They said I would have to move two blocks away.

Since I have heard horror stories about what the NYPD does to people, I told them I would 'cut them a break' and leave. The smartass cop asked if I want to go to the hospital. I asked, 'Why, because there is a nut in the White House?'

As I left I called back to them, 'Bush took good care of you and the Firemen, didn't he?' being sarcastic since Bush screwed them too.

p.s. tell them I'll be back with lawyers!!!!"

>> See what the CHICKENHAWK IN CHIEF has in store for San Francisco on Oct 25th

What is up with the NYC Police? Why did they send TEN police for one harmless man exercising his right to protest on a public sidewalk? Obviously they could have arrested him but didn't (altho they DID threaten him with harm) - so it appears he WON. Sheer intimidation. And like he said, "Look what Bush has done for Police and Firemen in that city."

Bush orders officials to stop the leaks
Posted Thursday, October 16, 2003 by symbolman

Concerned about the appearance of disarray and feuding within his administration as well as growing resistance to his policies in Iraq, President Bush - living up to his recent declaration that he is in charge - told his top officials to "stop the leaks" to the media, or else.

News of Bush's order leaked almost immediately.

Bush told his senior aides Tuesday that he "didn't want to see any stories" quoting unnamed administration officials in the media anymore, and that if he did, there would be consequences, said a senior administration official who asked that his name not be used.

An escalating turf war involving Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld, national security adviser Condoleezza Rice, and Secretary of State Colin L. Powell has generated an unusually bountiful crop of leaks in recent months, and one result is a criminal investigation of anonymous officials in the White House who are alleged to have leaked the name of a CIA covert officer.

The infighting, backstabbing and maneuvering on such major foreign-policy issues as North Korea, Syria, Iran and postwar Iraq have escalated to a level that veterans of government say they have not seen in years. At one point, the senior official said, Bush himself asked how bad it was.>> More

IS THIS THE ONION HUMOR MAG? Seriously, are these people NUTS? Would Clinton have to tell people he was in CHARGE? Would YOU? Saving Private Ryan... From Pain
Posted Sunday, October 12, 2003 by mediababe

By Noah Shachtman, Wired News

Pentagon-funded scientists and doctors are working on a suite of technologies and treatments to let soldiers heal themselves, just about instantly. Acute pain and blood loss will be controlled in five minutes or less, if the program is successful. And an injured GI, assuming the wounds are not too severe, can stay alive and fighting on the battlefield for up to 96 hours -- without the help of a medic, without being evacuated.

"It sounds coldhearted, but a wounded soldier can be more disruptive than a dead one. At minimum, you need a couple of guys to carry him out. And once he's out, it hurts unit cohesion," said Jim Lewis, with the Center for Strategic & International Studies. "So the more you can do upfront to stabilize someone -- and the more that person can do for themselves -- the better." >>More

White House lawyers screen documents to send FBI
Posted Wednesday, October 8, 2003 by symbolman

The White House began shipping documents Wednesday to the FBI for its CIA leak investigation after screening the material, a concern for some constitutional experts who say that gives the Bush administration room to withhold information.

Some 2,000 White House employees were asked to turn over telephone records, notes, correspondence, diary entries and other information that might help the FBI learn who leaked the identity of undercover CIA operations officer Valerie Plame.

Investigators already have interviewed Plame, the wife of former Ambassador Joseph C. Wilson, who publicly questioned Bush's claim that Iraq had tried to buy uranium in Africa.

"We are moving as quickly as we can to get the information to the Justice Department," White House press secretary McClellan said Wednesday evening.>> More

A TREASONOUS ACT INVOLVING NATIONAL SECURITY IN THE WHITE HOUSE - and it's no big deal. This isn't a LEAK ladies and gentlemen. THIS IS A BREACH OF SECURITY - and they DON'T CARE! Declare NOVAK an "Enemy Combatant" and arrest him. Send him to GITMO, turn those Egyptians we employ loose on him and get some ANSWERS. He's COMMITTED A CRIME and BUSH IS an ACCOMPLICE. IMPEACH THE BASTARDS, Throw them OUT.
