A BUZZFLASH EDITORIAL
Posted Wednesday, August 27, 2003 by symbolman

"A while back the Wall Street Journal called BuzzFlash "the shrillest and most dimwitted political site on the web."

We are regular targets of invective from the right wing shills (who are cousins to the kind of journalists who staffed Pravda under Soviet rule). So we weren't surprised when the Rupert Murdoch Neo-Con rag, The Weekly Standard, accused BuzzFlash and Sidney Blumenthal of slander."

Excerpt:

"So The Weekly Standard, a propaganda broad sheet for Rupert Murdoch's efforts to shape the U.S. government to meet his own needs and world views, criticizes Sidney Blumenthal rather than admitting the sad truth: Cheney and Bush were too preoccupied with larding up the pantry for their corporate contributors to notice that America was about to be attacked by terrorists."

Excerpt:

"It's like having a blind, brain-damaged parakeet as president. All the Chickenhawk Neo-Con "endless war" advisors sit around the parakeet and recommend war, deregulation, rollback of environmental protections, government contracts for campaign contributors, making America into an official Christian state, and so forth. Because the parakeet is mentally deficient, he keeps nodding his head all the time. The advisers interpret his nodding head as approval for their destructive plans. The Bush corporate media shills prop up the parakeet by insisting that his head nods are proof of his decisiveness and wisdom. This is what passes for good government with the Republicans and their media enablers!">> More

Bush Has Not Attended Even One Funeral Of A U.S. Soldier Killed In Iraq
Posted Wednesday, August 27, 2003 by symbolman

George W Bush to Barbara Walters, ABC "20/20," 12/13/02

"There's only one person who is responsible for making that decision , and that's me. And there's only one person who hugs the mothers and the widows, the wives and the kids on the death of their loved ones. Others hug, but having committed the troops, I've got an additional responsibility to hug, and that's me, and I know what it's like."

Family of soldier displaying outrage toward president

With their 23-year-old son serving as an Army reservist in Iraq, Pat and Paul Vogel are trying as best they can to support the work he and his fellow soldiers are doing. But the Barrington residents are finding it much more difficult to endorse Aaron's commander in chief.

The Vogels accuse President George Bush of using fabricated information about former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein's ties with Osama bin Laden, the mastermind of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, and Hussein's potential use of weapons of mass destruction against the United States as the basis for declaring war on Iraq.

"Our primary concern with the president is we feel like a lot of bad decisions have been made leading up to our son's and a lot of other troops' being involved," Paul Vogel said.

Vogel just attended the funeral of a 40-year-old reservist from Aaron's unit, a Wisconsin man who was killed and whose three children are fatherless after the truck he was driving in convoy was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade.

To show their disdain, the Vogels have hung a sign outside their business, Assured Staffing, on Main Street, stating: "Proud of our soldier! Ashamed of our president!" >> More

Where's George? He's out GOLFING. He has no time for funerals - THREE MEN DIED today - THREE AMERICAN SOLDIERS. Men who served their country. BUSH has DESERTED The Military THREE TIMES. First: When he went AWOL for a year. That's Documented. Second: When he allowed the Troops and Veterans to have their benefits CUT, even while they are DYING in the field - Combat Pay reduced from $250 to $100. And that's just the start. Third: HE'S NEVER ATTENDED EVEN ONE FUNERAL OF A SINGLE US SOLDIER KILLED IN IRAQ.

YOU call that a LEADER? We call it the COWARD FROM CRAWFORD. The Yellow STAIN from Texas. He has NO SHAME. Impeach this Crook. Get a REAL President in the People's House. Send ALI BABA BUSH and his FORTY THIEVES PACKING.

Bremer: Iraq Effort to Cost Tens of Billions
Posted Tuesday, August 26, 2003 by symbolman

Iraq will need "several tens of billions" of dollars from abroad in the next year to rebuild its rickety infrastructure and revive its moribund economy, and American taxpayers and foreign governments will be asked to contribute substantial sums, U.S. occupation coordinator L. Paul Bremer said yesterday.

Bremer said Iraqi revenue will not nearly cover the bill for economic needs "almost impossible to exaggerate." Just to meet current electrical demand will cost $2 billion, Bremer said, while a national system to deliver clean water would cost an estimated $16 billion over four years.

The figures, which must be added to the $4 billion the Pentagon spends each month on military operations in Iraq, offer the latest evidence that the price of the Iraqi occupation is growing substantially. A State Department official said the Bush administration is preparing to seek a "huge" supplemental spending bill from Congress. Administration sources also said the U.S.-controlled Coalition Provisional Authority is running so low on funds that the White House is considering seeking an emergency infusion next month to cover the organization's bills.

Bremer's comments, in an interview with Washington Post reporters and editors, came on a day when the Congressional Budget Office said the federal government would post a record deficit next year of $480 billion. Wary of revealing specifics, neither Bremer nor President Bush -- who referred to "substantial" new costs in a St. Louis speech -- would give details.>> More

DID KARL ROVE COMMIT A FELONY?
Posted Tuesday, August 26, 2003 by symbolman

THE VALERIE PLAME AFFAIR - JOSEPH WILSON PUTS THE FINGER ON KARL ROVE

Ambassador Joseph Wilson dropped a bombshell at a forum organized by Rep. Jay Inslee of Washington.

Wilson was asked whether he trusted the FBI to investigate the case. He started by saying that he had to speak hypothetically, since whether a crime was committed or not depended on his wife's status, about which he will not comment. He then explained the process, and expressed confidence that the career-service folks would play it straight, especially since a number of Members of Congerss, including not only Schumer and Durbin but also Henry Waxman and Hillary Clinton, were actively interested in the case and had promised him to keep the pressure on.

"I have confidence at the professional level that whatever they think is doable will be done." He acknowledged some uncertainty about whether public discussion might inhibit the investigation rather than forwarding it.

Then he opened up:

At the end of the day, it's of keen interest to me to see whether or not we can get Karl Rove frog-marched out of the White House in handcuffs. And trust me, when I use that name, I measure my words.

Josh Marshall had already noted his belief that Wilson had a suspect in mind. But having someone in mind is one thing, and making what is virtually a public accusation of a an aggravated felony is something else. If Wilson doesn't have the goods, he risks being personally discredited in a way that's very hard to recover from.

Now that Rove has been accused, it's for him to respond. It's a simple yes or no: Did he talk to Novak about Plame, or instruct anyone else to do so? I hope that some credentially journalists will be asking him that question.>> More

If this is even remotely true it needs to be investigated and splashed all over the front pages of every newspaper in the industry. HEY NEWS FOLKS! THIS has PULITZER PRIZE POTENTIAL. Get on it, do your job for once! Rove has his fingers in many pies. Maybe we need to subpoena Mr NOVAK and ask him a few simple questions.

The Air Is Thick With Lies
Posted Tuesday, August 26, 2003 by symbolman

This lying with the lives of the people of the nation is not solely the habit of Bush and his crew, although it is more widespread and being done in so many cases by so many of their people that it looks like a generation of liars.

This war with Iraq started with the full government standing right up and looking you in the eye and openly lying about why we had to invade Iraq immediately. Bush said the Iraqis had weapons of mass destruction. Why, they were starting to make nuclear bombs. He had a statement about this in his State of the Union speech. When it was shown to be a lie, Bush had people like Condoleezza Rice say, Why are you so worried about 26 words in a speech? That the 26 words were about nuclear weapons seemed beyond her. Out in the streets, you can scare people with only three words: "Stick 'em up."

I sit here in New York and I don't believe one single solitary word of what the government says. Can you believe anything Bush says? Only if you're a rank sucker. Then you put that Rumsfeld on and he grimaces and tells you the first thing he thinks of, and here is Powell, who I thought would be our first black national candidate and he's as bad as the rest of them.>> More

Peace activist buys house near Bush ranch in Texas - Crawford mayor vows to keep eye on house
Posted Monday, August 25, 2003 by symbolman

DALLAS, Texas (Reuters) -- President Bush has a new neighbor in Crawford, Texas -- a peace activist who plans to use his house near the president's ranch as a springboard to speak out on issues such as a war with Iraq.

John Wolf, a peace activist from the Dallas area, recently completed paperwork to buy a home in Crawford, a town of less than 1,000 people. He plans to use the facility as an interfaith peace house that can serve as a base to launch peace protests near the ranch Bush calls the Western White House.

"I wish the peace house was already up and running," Wolf said.

The house, near city hall, is one of the first structures that visitors to Crawford see after passing along a sign on the highway that welcomes people to town and reminds them it is the "Home of President George W. Bush".

Crawford Mayor Robert Campbell told the Dallas Morning News the town will keep a close eye on the peace house. Campbell was not immediately available for comment.

"We're not going to let them turn the town into a three-ring circus," Campbell told the paper. "If they want to protest, let them go to Washington.">> More

BLACK-OUT AT THE TIMES -- Readers Forced to View Unsolicited Corpornography
Posted Monday, August 25, 2003 by symbolman

I guess the lights never went back on at the Times. That's the only acceptable explanation for the loving Lewinsky The Paper of Record gave to the power industry on the front page of its Sunday edition.

Over 20-some column inches, we are told that "experts say" that the reason the lights went out over one fourth our continent ten days ago was that the electric industry, most particularly, transmission lines, "remained regulated." The answer to our woes, the Times informs us, is more deregulation -- except for the visionary rules contained in the President's energy bill.

In the editorial posing as a news story, the Times lectures us that the president's proposals would have been law, and saved us from the power outage, "but politics have stymied their progress."

Later in the article, the stymiers of progress are named: those evil small-minded "consumer groups.">> More

Take Back the Media gets Lampooned in Right Wing Rag

Annals of Bush Hating - By Byron York - THE NATIONAL REVIEW

Are you aware of the murderous history of George W. Bush — indeed, of the entire Bush family? Are you aware of the president's Nazi sympathies? His crimes against humanity? And do you know, by the way, that George W. Bush is a certifiable moron?

If you haven't heard the news, you're not on the cutting edge of Bush-hating. Anyone with Internet access can discover an extensive network of websites like Bushbodycount.com, which accuses the president and his family of involvement in "mysterious" deaths; Fearbush.com and Takebackthemedia.com, which traffic in images of Bush in Nazi regalia; and Presidentmoron.com and Toostupidtobepresident.com, which portray the president as a drooling idiot.

Taken together, the sites, and dozens of others like them, represent the far Left's online equivalent of the infamous Clinton Chronicles and Clinton Body Count videos and websites of the 1990s. Back then, the Clinton compilations troubled liberal observers and spurred a series of disapproving articles about Clinton-hating. Today, there appears to be less concern.>> More

Peace May Cost More Lives Than Iraq War
Posted Monday, August 25, 2003 by symbolman

BAGHDAD, Iraq - When President Bush declared an end to major combat in Iraq on May 1, 138 American soldiers had died, in fighting or by accident.

Nearly four months later, the death toll has nearly doubled, making it clear that keeping the peace and rebuilding the country will cost far more American lives than winning the war.

The U.S. military reported the deaths of two more soldiers on Sunday, raising the U.S. death toll to 275. Of those, 137 occurred since May 1, including 65 American soldiers killed in combat in an escalating guerrilla war.

With the next death of an American soldier the toll from major combat and the toll post-major combat will be equal.>> More

FIRST: THERE IS NO PEACE - IT IS STILL WAR. So this is a LIE. Second: If you will notice the word MAJOR next to combat is now a staple in ALL news stories. This is some kind of Command from high in the Govt food chain, perhaps even Rove, since he told the Coward from Crawford to specifically say MAJOR COMBAT to cover his ass. On MAY 1st when he ACTUALLY SAID "combat has ended" and NOW the White House is CHANGING the pages on the White House site - revising Whistle Ass's WRONG statement. Soldier morale dips, while fears increase - Notes from Iraq
Posted Monday, August 25, 2003 by symbolman

Editor's note: Public Opinion reporter Jaime North of Chambersburg is a specialist in the U.S. Army Reserves, serving with the 443rd Military Police. He contributes occasional dispatches about his experiences in Iraq.

Contrary to reports made by senior ranking officials in the national media, morale among the troops is fast approaching an abysmal state. So much so that our unit recently went through a screening by military personnel who specialize in analyzing low morale.

The word I received from the group's fellow soldiers was that their humvee received small arms fire. As we're taught, they drove the humvee out of the kill zone. Unbeknownst to them, a land mine was in their exit route. One soldier was seriously wounded. He lost both his legs.

It's a horrific story I've gotten used to hearing. This time it really hit close to home. Not only did they attack a group of people I see occasionally, but it happened in an area where I was planning to be a few hours later. If that group hadn't gone, we may have been the targeted humvee. I have to say, I'm completely beside myself.

I know the excitement of war has worn off back home, with only a story or two about our actions appearing on TV and in newspapers every other day. Unfortunately, many times when reports mention casualties, the victims are depersonalized by the use of numbers. Many Americans may think that since the combat portion of the war is complete, our soldiers are out of harm's way. So what if one or two soldiers get hurt or die, at least it's not hundreds. These are only isolated incidents.

But how many isolated incidents will it take for the American public to see a trend developing. I don't care about all the protests and editorials. All I know is that I'm here, and so are 100,000 other servicemen and servicewomen.>> More

Meanwhile, the Coward of Crawford GOLFS.

"Coward in Prez's Clothing"
Posted Monday, August 25, 2003 by symbolman

"Bring 'em on," the man said. He is not a brave man, but he plays one on television.

When it came his turn to fight in a war, he hid behind Daddy. Then he had another drink and hid from the National Guard. Then he had another drink.

When our nation was attacked on Sept. 11, he hid in an airplane, flying to and fro around the country. While our nation was crying for leadership, he was making sure the coast was clear.

He later had his minions blame the Secret Service.

"Bring 'em on," the man said, puffing up his chest. And they did bring 'em on, one bomb at a time, one rocket-propelled grenade at a time, one rifle shot at a time, so terrifying to a relative of mine that she cried herself to sleep every night she was there.

(Welcome home, baby. They can't get you here.)

And the planes fly into Dover Air Force Base in Delaware (sometimes sneaking in at midnight), where we have the people and the equipment to make dead young people look almost like they are sleeping.

Then we send the dead young people home to their parents and brothers and sisters and grandparents and other relatives and friends, and we send pretty flags with them, and handsome men in uniform, and we call the dead young people heroes.

We call them heroes because they're dead. If they were still alive, we'd be angling to reduce their combat pay and trying to figure out a way to close the hospitals they'll be entitled to use if they survive.

"Bring 'em on," the man said, and a nation of sheep baaed in unison and said what a good boy is Georgie, and how thankful we can be that we have a regular guy like him at the helm instead of that wimpy Al Gore.>> More

Now is the Time to Impeach this Coward. He Golfs and bobs for money while spending our tax dollars doing it - and troops he lied into combat DIE daily, and when they get home, they are CHEATED by this very same RICH MisAdministration.

Dare accepted on electronic voting machines - Programmer says she can crack system
Posted Saturday, August 23, 2003 by symbolman

In the end, Friday's two-hour discussion of whether computers should be the sole tabulators of Georgia voters' ballots came down to a challenge.

Roxanne Jekot, a 51-year-old computer program developer from Cumming, said she and a few expert friends could crack Georgia's $54 million touch-screen voting system in a matter of minutes.

Bring it on, said state election officials.

"If something can beat the machine, we need to know that," said Brit Williams, a retired Kennesaw State University professor who helped design the state's touch-screen security system. He put the odds of corrupting the software undetected at 1 billion to one.

The dare was made and accepted at the first of a series of seminars at Kennesaw State sponsored by Secretary of State Cathy Cox to defuse questions about the vulnerability of the statewide system she installed last year.

Jekot said she could be ready as soon as next week. She said all she wants to do is point out weaknesses so that they can be fixed -- and declares she can put an unauthorized vote anywhere she wants.>> More

U.S. Taps Media Chief for Iraq
Posted Saturday, August 23, 2003 by symbolman

The standards and enforcement mechanisms are being "fleshed out," said a senior official of the governing Coalition Provisional Authority.

A board to take complaints about media excesses was envisaged, but the official declined to specify the limits on news coverage.

In June, L. Paul Bremer, the civil administrator in Iraq, issued guidelines for all media outlets here, forbidding them from inciting violence, promoting "ethnic and religious hatred" or circulating false information "calculated to promote opposition" to the occupation authority.

Occasionally, U.S. soldiers have raided newspaper offices deemed to be in breach of the regulations, and they have closed at least two newspapers and one radio station. But the delicacy of sending heavily armed troops to enforce media rules has prompted the occupation officials to look for other ways to exercise their power to censor.>> More

Janeane Garofalo turns serious on CNN's 'Crossfire'
Posted Saturday, August 23, 2003 by symbolman

Tucker Carlson is no match for Janeane Garofalo.

As Carlson's liberal sparring partner on CNN's Crossfire this week, the former Saturday Night Live star has more than held her own. And anybody else's, for that matter.

News flash: Garofalo is no political dilettante. A Providence College grad with a degree in American studies and history, she devours all things political. She even watches C-Span.

A frequent guest on political talk shows, Garofalo is one of a select few actors to host CNN's 4:30 p.m. weekday slugfest. (Others include Ron Silver and Alec Baldwin.)

"I actually find political talk shows interesting. I am a fan of the form. If anyone would hire me, I'd like to have a show like [Chris Matthews'] Hardball or Crossfire."

But at a much lower decibel level, a la Charlie Rose.

"Having people constantly fighting and being so constrained by time is very anxiety-producing," Garofalo says. "The level of discourse is not edifying enough. When you talk about things as complex as the Middle East, one needs time."

So why host Crossfire for a week? "I cannot deny my attraction to it. I can get emotional and quite strident."

Garofalo continues doing stand-up and is writing a collection of essays, The Dumb and the Mean.>> More

There really isn't much Carlson left after a week of his "whiny conspiracy theories" talk instead of any rational discourse with Janeane. She beat Carlson like a circus donkey and rightly so. White House Pressured EPA Not To Warn Public About Health Effects of 9/11
Posted Thursday, August 21, 2003 by symbolman

New yet-to-be-released report from the EPA’s inspector criticizes the White House for ordering the deletion of information warning downtown New York residents about possible health effects and preventing the release on information on how the public should clean contaminated apartments.

In the days and weeks following the collapse of the World Trade Center, the White House pressured the Environmental Protection Agency not to warn the public about the potential health effects and to not issue guidelines for the public about cleaning apartments and offices.

That is the conclusion of a yet-to-be-released investigation by the EPA's inspector general, according to a report in The New York Times. The report goes on to say the White House's handling of situation was influenced strongly by its desire to see the stock markets quickly reopen on Wall Street.

The report details the role of the White House Council on Environmental Quality.

The report reads: “As a result of the White House C.E.Q.’s influence, guidance for cleaning indoor spaces and information about the potential health effects from WSTC debris were not included in the EPA’s issued press releases.

In addition, based on C.E.Q.’s influence, reassuring information was added to at least one press release and cautionary information was deleted from EPA’s draft version of that press release.” >> More

Congressman "Wild Bill" Janklow: The Grand Hypocrisy Party (GHP) Role Model of the Week
Posted Thursday, August 21, 2003 by symbolman

A BUZZFLASH NEWS ANALYSIS

In case you've been on vacation -- or preoccupied with the emergence of a terrorist state in Iraq as a RESULT of Bush's war - one of the Grand Hypocrisy Party's favorite role models, South Dakota Congressman Bill Janklow, was driving his Cadillac last week, when, according to a prosecutor, he ran a stop sign and collided with a motorcycle, killing the driver [LINK].

Janklow, a "revered" GOP politician in Tom Daschle's home state, has had his eye on a U.S. Senate seat for years, but was most recently dissuaded by the White House from running against Democratic Senator Tim Johnson in 2002, because Karl Rove wanted a younger "Ken" Stepford-style candidate, former Congressman John Thune. (Janklow replaced Thune. South Dakota has only one congressman.)

Late on Wednesday, it was determined by the South Dakota Highway Patrol that Janklow was speeding -- perhaps as many as 20 miles above the speed limit -- when he blew the stop sign. [LINK]

Let's just say, Janklow's speeding proclivity is not new. According to one news report, "The former four-term South Dakota governor is a notorious speeder, picking up a dozen speeding tickets in a four-year period in the early 1990s." >> More

The Real Scoop Behind Moore and The ROCK.
Posted Thursday, August 21, 2003 by symbolman

Now, let's see what the Federal District Court said about Roy Moore:

While not argued by the plaintiffs, the court is concerned that Chief Justice Moore's involvement with Coral Ridge Ministries, a Christian media outlet, violates the third, entanglement prong of the Lemon test. Aside from its being the only media outlet to record the night-time placement of the monument in the Alabama State Judicial Building, Coral Ridge has used the Chief Justice's name and his installation of the Ten Commandments monument to raise funds for not only his defense but also its own evangelical purposes.

For example, Coral Ridge uses a picture of the monument to raise money for the Chief Justice's legal defense and, at the same time, to raise money for its own work. A fund-raising letter from Coral Ridge President Dr. James Kennedy included a donor-response form which read, in part, "I want to help provide for Justice Moore's and the Ten Commandments' legal defense. Also, use my gift to continue sharing the life-transforming Gospel, through new editions of The Coral Ridge Hour and all the ongoing work of Coral Ridge Ministries." In another fund-raising letter, Kennedy wrote, "Please pray and send your most generous possible gift to help us aid in the judge's defense and continue all of the outreaches of the ministry together."

Coral Ridge has also used the Chief Justice and the monument as a subject of many of its television and radio programs and has, a number of times, highlighted the Chief Justice's lawsuit in its newsletter "Impact." Coral Ridge even uses the Chief Justice to raise funds on its website: "If you would like to help with the $200,000 Ten Commandments Defense fund and also enable Dr. Kennedy to continue the work of this ministry, send your gift."

Additionally, while the Chief Justice is a state official, sued for his placement of a monument in a state building, the State of Alabama is not paying Chief Justice Moore's legal expenses; these expenses are instead being paid by a private source, Coral Ridge. In a real sense, therefore, the installation of the monument can be viewed as a joint venture between the Chief Justice and Coral Ridge, as both parties have a direct interest in its continued presence in the rotunda.

A credible argument could be made that this type of entanglement is specifically the type of "evil[] against which Clause protects ...'sponsorship, financial support, and active sovereign in religious activity.'>> More

We believe that this kind of conduct is in direct conflict with the Judicial Cannons that allow Moore to be a Justice. He should be removed from that Court as soon as possible. This is an outrage.
